Citizens in San Francisco and beyond have demanded change, and in 2025, they’re going to get it. Incoming Mayor Daniel Lurie is set to prioritize government accountability, while the newly elected Board of Supervisors will start the process of commission reform as mandated by the passage of Prop E.
If we want good changes, it helps to have good tools. That’s why I’m excited to launch v2 of the SF Government Graph - the first complete map of San Francisco’s government:
How to Use the Graph
Like v1, this tool provides a complete catalog of all entities in the city government and the relationships between them. With v2, the interface is prettier and more intuitive. We’ve also added richer information - descriptions, employee counts, links to legal sources, official websites, and more!
It’s also easier to find what you’re looking for; search now includes entity names, descriptions, service areas, and alternate names like “SFPD”.
And there’s more on the way! Several cool features will roll out in the near future.
How We Got Here
When I launched v1 I noted that surprising progress is possible:
It’s worth noting how quickly the world can improve. In July of 2023, the San Francisco city government didn’t even have an org chart. So I made one. Until June of 2024, the San Francisco city government didn’t have a complete list of entities. So I made one! Now I’m bringing that list to life.
We’re moving even faster now and there’s much more to do.
What’s Next
Platform automation: We're using LLMs and other software magic to automate the generation and maintenance of the graph.
Accountability Applications: We completely rebuilt the v2 data model so we can track legislative activity, budgets/spending, and more.
How You Can Help
I’m always happy to get feedback and feature requests. I’m also raising funds to continue this work. v3 is scoped and ready to go, but I need resources to make it happen. Reach out if you want to support this work!
I sincerely hope you apply for a job in the Lurie administration. Do you know the way to do that? There is a public Google form you fill out.
Super cool. I'd like to support your idea. What's the best way?
